Call Me Sober

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know

What is Call Me Sober?
Call Me Sober is a free, anonymous addiction hotline that connects you with peers who understand recovery. Instead of professional counselors, you talk to real people who have been through addiction and can offer genuine support without judgment.
Is the addiction hotline really anonymous?
Yes, completely. No phone numbers are shared between callers. No personal information is collected or stored. Your identity stays private throughout the entire call.
How much does it cost to use the addiction support line?
Call Me Sober is 100% free. There are no fees, subscriptions, or hidden costs. The service is funded by donations from our community.
Who answers the calls on this addiction hotline?
Calls are answered by volunteer peer supporters—real people who have personal experience with addiction and recovery. They're not professional counselors, but they understand what you're going through because they've been there.
What happens when I tap 'I'm Struggling'?
When you tap 'I'm Struggling,' you're asking for support. After a quick setup, you can request a call anytime. We'll find an available peer supporter and call your phone. The call will come from our service number (which may show as unknown), connecting you anonymously with someone who's been through addiction and wants to help.
What happens when I tap 'I'm Available'?
When you tap 'I'm Available,' you're signing up to give support. After setup, you can toggle your availability on when you're ready to take calls. When someone needs help, your phone will ring from our service number. You'll be connected anonymously with someone who's struggling and needs a compassionate ear.
How long are the support calls?
Calls last up to 20 minutes. This keeps the line available for others while still providing meaningful support when you need it most.
Is this a crisis hotline or emergency service?
No, Call Me Sober is peer support, not an emergency service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, please call 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Can I become a peer support listener?
Yes! If you have personal experience with addiction and want to help others, you can sign up as a listener. Tap "I'm Available" to get started, then toggle your availability on when you're ready to take calls, and you'll be matched with someone who needs support.
Why might calls be silenced on my iPhone?
iPhones with 'Silence Unknown Callers' enabled will silence calls from numbers not in your contacts. To ensure you receive our calls, save our number to your contacts. You can do this from Settings → Save Contact. After saving, calls from Call Me Sober will ring normally.
How do I make sure I don't miss calls?
1) Save our number to your contacts from Settings. 2) On iPhone, check Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers is OFF, or ensure our number is saved. 3) Make sure Do Not Disturb is off when expecting a call. 4) Keep your phone volume up and not on silent mode.
